Unless you’re reading a modern translation of the Bible, you won’t find any reference to the Dead Sea because it didn’t acquire that name until well after the original scriptures were written. Instead, you’ll see it referred to as the Salt Sea, where several significant occurrences from the Old Testament were said to have taken place.
The area around the Dead Sea is riddled with caves that go back to biblical times, and one of these caves was no doubt the setting for the story of David sparing the life of King Saul. According to the story, Saul was looking for David, to kill him, and happened to wander into the cave where David was hiding. David was able to get close enough to Saul to cut off a piece of his robe, but he didn’t harm him. Instead, he used the piece of cloth to prove that he had no intention of killing the king.
In another story, the prophet Ezekiel received a vision where God told him that a stream flowing eastward would “heal” the waters of the Salt Sea so that it would someday sustain life and become a lush, productive place with good fishing.
While the world is still waiting for Ezekiel’s prophecy to be fulfilled, the caves that still exist in the Dead Sea area have yielded a different kind of miracle: the Dead Sea Scrolls. These are the oldest documents of recorded biblical scripture, discovered in the 1940s. They include around 900 texts, many of which are mere fragments, which go back close to 2,300 years. In addition to most of the books of the Old Testament, they also include some writings that have not been included in the Bible.
